ST. CHARLES, IL — On a sweltering summer day, with a theatrical event on the line, the show was nearly stopped before the curtain even rose. The manager at Marquee Youth Stage, a beloved non-profit children´s theater in St. Charles, was in a panic as temperatures inside the venue climbed to unbearable levels, threatening the comfort and safety of the young performers and their audience.
In a last-minute plea for help, the theater reached out to Porta-Air, Inc., a local climate control rental company. In an act of community spirit, Porta-Air quickly responded by donating a portable water-cooled air conditioning unit for the event.
The unit, like the one pictured, was set up in the theater´s common area. Water-cooled AC units are highly effective for enclosed indoor spaces because they do not require a large exhaust duct for hot air. Instead, they use a steady supply of water to absorb and carry away the heat, quietly and efficiently.
However, these powerful units come with specific logistical challenges. "Electrical and water supply often limit the amount of portable water-cooled AC units that can be installed," a Porta-Air representative explained. A single unit requires both a sufficient power source and access to a continuous water supply and drain, which can be a challenge in older buildings or spaces not designed for such equipment.
Due to these utility limitations at the theater, only one unit could be installed. While the single air conditioner "was not enough to cool the space entirely," according to the stage manager, it provided critical relief. It "took the edge off" the oppressive heat, lowering the temperature just enough to make the space safe and comfortable for the event to proceed.
The young actors of Marquee Youth Stage were able to perform for their friends and family, and the event was a success.
"We were just happy to help them out," the Porta-Air representative added. "The youths at Marquee work so hard on their productions. Even with the utility limitations, we were glad we could provide a solution that allowed the show to go on.
