Chicago, IL - Portable Water-Cooled Equipment, PWC2412 Installation in Basement
In a few instances, Porta-Air has temporarily installed portable rentals in basements to offset the heat dissipation from the other refrigeration equipment. When the condensing unit of a refrigerator or beverage display case is located in the basement, another form of cooling is needed to maintain the basement temperature. If the basement temperature is not maintained to within reason, the refrigerator or display case will not operate properly. In the Andersonville neighborhood of Chicago, we installed a water-cooled unit in the basement to cool down the air-cooled condenser coils of walk-in refrigerators. A temporary air unit was needed since the permanent mini split that normally provided cooling, failed.

Some portable air-cooling installations are straight forward and can be hooked up quickly, while others involve more time to install. Temporary water and condensate lines were installed above a drop ceiling and routed through a hallway, down a stairwell and into the basement where adequate water pressure and drainage was located.

In some of the temporary cooling installations, placement of the units is critical so heat can be properly ducted out of the space. If condenser ducting is not properly installed, heat will be added to the space from the portable AC unit, thus compounding the problem.
